Research
Many collaborative linkages of expertise in the biomedical sciences have been forged in the EMU due to its location and unique expertise of Faculty staff, postgraduate students and members of affiliated institutions are extensively supported in their pursuit of excellence in research. Assistance with all technical aspects of the projects, appropriate training and advice on correct methodologies for specimen preparation are provided by the EM unit staff and their expertise can be continuously accessed when working in the unit.
Current research projects in the unit include protein visualization of amyloid and Aβ in Alzheimer's disease, the degree of demyelination of nerve fibers in Multiple Sclerosis, the uptake of metal complexes in neuronal and non-neuronal cells, white matter damage following injury in rat spinal chord, virus present in tissues and structural changes in tumor cells.
